Gloria Gibson

Former President of Northeastern Illinois University

Career History & Education

Gloria Gibson has a PhD in Folklore and Ethnomusicology Concentration as well as both a
BA and an MA in Music Education and was president of Northeastern Illinois University,
Chicago, from July 2018 to June 2023. In this role, her key accomplishments included
creating the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, establishing the Division of Enrollment
Management, securing external funding from foundations, corporations, and individual
donors, and initiating the Campus Climate Study with Rankin & Associates to assist the
university in assessing its environments for living, learning, and working.

Beyond the Classroom

As president of the university, Ms. Gibson participated in statewide committees including the Equity Working Group, the Illinois Board of Higher Education, and the Latino College Landscape Study Advisory Committee. She initiated and guided the establishment of the Master of Science in Nursing program and the university’s first doctoral program in Urban Education. During her time at the university, Ms. Gibson also oversaw and advanced initiatives aimed at improving retention (especially for students of color) and implemented the Afghan Transition Program to assist Afghan refugees in attending Northeastern Illinois University, which was approved by the Board of Trustees and funded from the institution’s reserves.

Morgan State University

From January 2015 to June 2018, Ms. Gibson was the senior vice-president and provost of Morgan State University, Baltimore, where she reported directly to the university’s president. During her time at Morgan State University, she oversaw searches for key administrative positions, provided leadership for the Middle State Commission on Higher Education’s reaccreditation visit, and established the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Ms. Gibson also provided leadership regarding the development and approval of online programs including Master of Business Administration, Master of Social Work, Master of Public Health with concentration in Executive Health Management, and Master of Community College Leadership.

University of Northern Iowa

Ms. Gibson was executive vice president and provost at the University of Northern Iowa from July 2009 to June 2014. In this role, she promoted academic excellence by hiring transformational faculty members, securing membership of the Higher Learning Commission’s Assessment Academy, and providing professional development opportunities for faculty. She also developed the Retention Council, in partnership with the vice president of Student Affairs.

Hobbies & Interests

To relax, Ms. Gibson enjoys reading, walking, gardening, strength training, practicing yoga,
and watching professional soccer, basketball, and baseball. She also loves to travel and has
recently visited Colombia and Paris, is an active member of the YMCA, and is a member of
the board of Covenant House, Illinois, which focuses on providing accommodation and
support for homeless youth.
